The Austin American Statesman reports that Travis County officials have fallen short of City goals for hiring minority-owned firms for work for 2010 and 2011. Officials tapped into only a fraction of available services operated by Hispanics, African Americans, women, and other minorities in the past 2 years — nearly 20 years after adopting a policy to hire more minority-owned companies.
With the amount of minority and female business representation in the Austin area, how does this disparity exist? Part of the problem may lie in stereotypical ways of thinking about these types of businesses, particularly work seen as typical to these groups.
